Engraving Tool Bit Selection

Tool Bits - Styles and Uses


The type of engraving tool bit used will greatly affect the appearance of the engraved line. The information below is based on the material you are engraving.

Please note that finding the engraving tool for your specific application may require trying a few different tool styles or sizes.

2L Engraving Tools can be used when engraving with:
  • cnc milling machines,
  • our patented Spring Loaded Engraving Tools,
  • top loading engraving machines, or
  • other industrial engraving and marking equipment.

Our tool bits can be used with standard holders such as collets, endmill holders or shrink fit holders, or can be used with a Spring Loaded Tool (exceptions noted below).






GENERAL PURPOSE ENGRAVING
(these tool bits can be used for a wide range of materials)

VERY HARD MATERIALS
Inconel, Hasteloy, Armor, Armor Plate, Titanium & more
  • Tough Tip
     
  • Armor Mill  - this tool should be held rigidly and is not recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool.
Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel, Tool Steel, Cold Rolled Steel, Gun Steel & others
Glass
  • Diamond Tip - recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool to produce fine lines
     
  • Carbide Point - recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool for small engraving
     
  • Tough Tip
Stone, Granite, Marble
  • Diamond Tip - recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool to produce fine lines
     
  • Carbide Point - recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool for small engraving
     
  • Armor Mill  - this tool should be held rigidly and is not recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool

VERY SMALL ENGRAVING
  • Profiler -S or Profiler -G - for small engraving, Profiler tip sizes of .005" and .010" are generally not recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool
     
  • Micro Profiler -S or Micro Profiler -G - use S or G depending on material hardness for small engraving, this tool is generally not recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool
     
  • Carbide Point - recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool for small engraving
     
  • Diamond Tip - recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool to produce fine lines

MORE Materials
Corian Gold, Silver, Jewelry and Wax applications
  • Profiler -S - for small engraving, Profiler tip sizes of .005" and .010" are generally not recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool
     
  • Micro Profiler -S - for small engraving, this tool is generally not recommended for use with a Spring Loaded Tool
