Engraving Tool Diameters and Lengths
All of our engraving tools are produced in various diameters and lengths. If the length and diameter of the tool are not defined by the type of engraving machine being used, then using a shorter length and larger diameter toolbit is recommended for maximum rigidity.
The 3/16” (0.1875”) diameter toolbits are the most popular size due to their rigidity and cost. Although the 1/8” (0.125”) diameter carbide tools are less expensive than the larger diameter tools, they are not as rigid as the 3/16” diameter tools. The less rigid tools may slightly deflect or bend during cutting which causes vibration and shortens the life of the tools. The 1/4” (0.250”) diameter tools are the most rigid tools and are recommended when cutting very tough materials.
The longer length tools are often required for use by some smaller tabletop
engraving machines. They can also be used in situations where an extended length
toolbit is required such as engraving at the bottom of a deep pocket.
